Nathan Redmond’s first goal since October saw off Liverpool and gave Southampton a narrow first-leg lead in their EFL Cup semi-final.
Redmond drove a low shot past Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius but later wasted two great chances to extend the Saints’ advantage.
Cedric Soares also wasted an opportunity on the break as Liverpool failed to create a meaningful chance.
Claude Puel’s side will now defend their lead at Anfield on 25 January.
Philippe Coutinho did return from injury as a substitute for Liverpool in the second half but Jurgen Klopp’s side largely disappointed.
