El 54º triunfo de Hamilton en la Fórmula Uno se produjo cuando lideró desde la pole position de principio a fin, el tercer gran slam de su carrera, pero no fue un paseo.
Muchos coches entraron en el taller a cambiar neumáticos, entre ellos Sebastian Vettel y Fernando Alonso. Sin embargo, un accidente sufrido por Giovinazzi en la tercera vuelta provocó un verdadero vuelco en la situación, porque cuando entró el safety car en pista, la mayoría de coches pasaron por el taller y cambiaron neumáticos sin perder posiciones. Fue el caso de Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo, Kimi Raikkonen y Max Verstappen, que había realizado una salida espectacular ascendiendo hasta el séptimo lugar. Todo ello provocó que Vettel se viera relegado hasta la sexta posición, justo por delante de un Carlos Sainz que remontó y aprovechó bien el hecho de no tener que cambiar neumáticos.
La carrera pareció quedar bastante definida, porque el anunciado duelo entre Hamilton y Vettel se había frustrado en las vueltas iniciales. Hamilton iba sólido en cabeza, seguido de Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Verstappen y Bottas. Pero un trompo incomprensible del segundo piloto de Mercedes le relegó hasta la décima posición, justo por detrás de Fernando Alonso. El asturiano había realizado una salida espectacular situándose en la novena posición. Rodar en mojado le beneficiaba, porque contaban más las manos del piloto que las prestaciones del coche. Y de esta forma, el asturiano se mantuvo en los puntos hasta que la pista se fue secando. Hasta entonces, Alonso había conseguido mantener a raya a Bottas varias vueltas. Pero cuando todo se fue normalizando, el Mercedes le adelantó en un plis plas.

Hamilton’s 54th F1 triumph came as he led from pole position from start to finish – the third grand slam of his career – but it was no walkover.
The race began on a damp but rapidly drying track, with everyone bar Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz on intermediate tyres. Sainz quickly rued that gamble, spinning off on Lap 1 and then needlessly brushing the wall as he made his way back onto the circuit.
It quickly became clear though that slicks were in fact the right choice and others, including Vettel, pitted for dry rubber under a virtual safety car on the second lap, triggered when Force India’s Sergio Perez had collided with Williams’ Lance Stroll on the first, leaving the Canadian rookie beached in the gravel.
