While Floyd Mayweather Jr. remains retired, the boxing world is finally getting a long-awaited super fight. Canelo Alvarez will fight Gennady Golovkin on Sept. 16, which essentially saved fighting fans from the charade that would have been Mayweather-Conor McGregor.
But if boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya had his way, Mayweather would still bring an end to his retirement. His opponent, though, would be the winner of Canelo-GGG.
De La Hoya, who promotes Canelo with Golden Boy Boxing, joined ESPN’s First Take on Tuesday and gave some advice for Mayweather’s potential comeback fight.
Mayweather hasn’t fought since 2015 when he defeated Andre Berto and retired with a 49-0 record. He has since spent the past two years exchanging verbal blows with UFC’s McGregor.
Golovkin is an undefeated 37-0 while Canelo holds a 49-1-1 record and suffered a loss to Mayweather back in 2013. He was just 23 years old at the time.
