PARIS, Francia – La primera cabeza de serie Simona Halep no solo avanzó a su tercera final del Abierto de Francia, sino que también ganó una batalla por el No. 1 del mundo sobre la campeona de 2016 Garbiñe Muguruza, 6-1, 6-4.
Halep tenía que vencer a la española para mantener su puesto en la cima de la clasificación de la WTA, y nunca iba a ser fácil para la rumana, que perdió tres de sus cuatro encuentros anteriores con Muguruza, más recientemente en el Western & Southern Open el verano pasado.

Simona Halep’s love affair with Roland-Garros continues, with the Romanian advancing to her third final in the French capital.
The world No.1, at her most productive Grand Slam event, overcame the challenge of in-form Garbine Muguruza 6-1 6-4 in one hour and 32 minutes.
With the victory, Halep retains her world No.1 ranking.
After blazing to a 5-0 lead in the first set, the second was a much tighter affair, with 2016 champion Muguruza moving ahead 3-1 with a break.
But Halep reeled her in, and came out on top of a mammoth ninth game that featured seven deuces and three break points for the Spaniard.
Having escaped that, Halep broke serve to love in the very next game to close out an impressive victory.
«I’m really, really glad that I won this match,» said the 2014 and 2017 finalist. «Garbine is a very good opponent and a great player. I’m just glad I managed to play one of my best matches again.
«I was 4-2 down, and I just fought for every ball. I didn’t want to give up. I had confidence that if I won the first set in that style, I have to play the same. I did everything I could, and did what I planned before the match, and it was great.
Halep will face the winner of the upcoming semi-final between Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens, and will be shooting for her first Grand Slam title.
«I’m happy that I can have another chance to play the final here in my favourite Grand Slam – I hope I can be better than last year,» said Halep, who fell to Jelena Ostapenko in three sets last year.
