Venus Williams has withdrawn from the 2014 China Open due to a viral illness.
In a statement released by the WTA Williams said, “I’ve had an amazing time here in China and I’m really disappointed to not be able to walk on court today for my match against Petra.” She was scheduled to play against No.3 Petra Kvitova in a third round match.
“I just wish the rest of the players the best of luck this week and I’m looking forward to coming back to Beijing next year.”

In 2011, Venus was diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, a chronic autoimmune disease.

In 2011 Williams retired from both Toronto and Canada due to viral illness. She returned for the U.S. Open but had to drop out once again due to illness after the first round. It was in this withdrawal that she cited Sjogren’s syndrome as the reason for exiting the tournament.
